Man arrested at hotel

BUTLER TWP — A hotel hullabaloo Saturday morning landed a person in prison and a police officer at the hospital.

Butler Township police Sgt. Steven Hensel suffered a hand injury in the fracas at the Fairfield Inn & Suites off Route 8 north. Hensel was injured while helping arrest a Fayette County man in the hotel lobby about 5:15 a.m.

The suspect, Fijian native Eliki Wainiqolo, 35, who lives in Republic, remains in the Butler County Prison on $100,000 bail. He faces felony assault and other charges.

Police were called to the Fairfield Inn shortly after 5 a.m. for a complaint of Wainiqolo pounding on the walls of his room. By the time officers got there, the allegedly intoxicated suspect had moved to the lobby, said Police Chief John Hays.

City police also were called and assisted township police.

When police tried to handcuff Wainiqolo, he struggled and fought with the officers. During the tussle, one of Hensel’s hands was cut. He later went to Butler Memorial Hospital.

Hensel missed the next day on the job because of swelling to his injured hand, Hays said, but he returned to duty Monday.

Wainiqolo, an employee of a natural gas drilling site in the county, was arraigned on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.

Hays said the defendant, after having time to sober up following his arrest, apologized to police for his behavior.
