Seneca Valley plans updates

New study will determine work

JACKSON TWP — Several buildings and athletic facilities in the Seneca Valley School District will be renovated in the next decade, and a feasibility study will determine the scope of those renovations.

Most of the district’s school board members and administrators gathered Thursday night to publicly interview three firms vying for the contract for that study.

Bob Cook, district director of buildings, grounds and security, said administrators whittled down an initial field of nine firms to the final three.

Those firms submitted quotes that varied from $48,000 to $125,000 for the feasibility study, he said.

Six school board members and a host of administrators sat in on the interviews. A representative from each firm presented a proposal for 15 minutes, which was followed by a question-and-answer session with the board members and administrators.

The study will use factors like geographic constraints when determining the scope of renovations, while it also will analyze current and future enrollment and how facilities meet the district’s growing enrollment.

The school board took no vote Thursday night but is expected to talk about the issue at its April 13 meeting.

Superintendent Tracy Vitale said the renovations and upgrades will require planning and smart budgeting and also input from the community.

Vitale said she and her administrative team decided to make the interviews public for that reason.

“This is so taxpayers understand where we are and where we need to go,” Vitale said. “These conversations need to be very public.”

Board President Eric DiTullio was one of the school board members to attend the interviews, and echoed the sentiment put forth by Vitale.

“This is a big commitment,” he said about the renovations. “We have to make sure we do it the right way.”

Cook said the feasibility study won’t take more than six months to do.

The three firms that want to do the study are VEBH Architects from Pittsburgh, Stantec from Pittsburgh and the Eckles Group from New Castle.
