Break-in, fire reported at home on Oak Street

Butler police and firefighters were called to a reported break-in and fire Thursday afternoon at a home in the 300 block of Oak Street in the city’s Institute Hill section.

No one was injured and damage was minimal, authorities said.

The man who lives there told investigators that he returned home about 4:40 p.m. and found the house filled with smoke.

City police said the man also reported that someone had broken into the house. Officers later canvassed the neighborhood, asking residents if they saw anything at or near the time of the fire.

The investigating officer had not filed a report as of this morning and police had no other information.

Butler Fire Chief Nick Ban did not immediately return a telephone call this morning.
