Seneca Valley applies for Holocaust education grant

JACKSON TWP — One of several grants Seneca Valley’s school board approved applying for at its meeting Monday, Oct. 12, would support Holocaust education events and projects for high schoolers, continuing the school district’s efforts to inform students on the sensitive subject.

The grant would be funded by the Schonwetter Holocaust Education Foundation, a national nonprofit that funds educational grants to provide learning materials and books, support field trips and programming and bring Holocaust survivor speakers into schools and classrooms.

In recent years, Seneca Valley has had numerous events meant to inform students on the atrocities witnessed by those of the not-so-distant past and sharing the experiences of those who persevered.

Last October, students at Seneca Valley Senior High School had the opportunity to hear from then-96-year-old Howard Chandler, a native of Poland and one of roughly 200,000 Holocaust survivors still living. Chandler spoke about witnessing Nazis storm his Wierzbnik Jewish community; the murder of his brother, sister and mother; and why he feels the need to share his experiences with younger generations.

Last September, dozens of students joined Jim Lucot, a history teacher who has since retired, to attend a presentation at Rodef Shalom Congregation in Pittsburgh by Holocaust survivor Marion Ein Lewin, who shared her story of survival at Bergen-Belsen with her twin brother, Steven Hess.
