Police: Fewer people denied gun purchases in Q3 of 2026 compared with 2025

Slightly fewer people were denied access when attempting to purchase a firearm in quarter three of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, according to state police.

Police said 3,778 out of 247,990 people were denied the ability to purchase a firearm in quarter three of 2026 compared with 4,213 out of 261,405 people being denied in the same period in 2025.

Out of the denials, 810 were referred to law enforcement in quarter three of 2026, and 910 were referred to law enforcement in the same period in 2025.

At the point of purchase, 18 individuals were issued an arrest warrant in 2026 compared with 22 in 2025.

The numbers are based on how many times the Pennsylvania Instant Check System is used. The system is used by sheriffs and licensed firearms dealers to determine if someone is eligible to buy a gun.

Investigations are initiated when an individual attempts to provide false information on a firearms application, which is a third-degree felony.
