Fire destroys house, police investigate

GROVE CITY — A state police fire marshal is investigating a house fire at 149 Park St. that kept firefighters on scene for nearly four hours Thursday.

Capt. Chase Badger of the Grove City Volunteer Fire Department said crews had the blaze knocked down “pretty quickly” and prevented damage to nearby homes.

The fire was reported at 1:49 p.m.

Badger said no one was hurt in the blaze at the single-family home. Keith McKinney, whose mother, Rachel, lives on the street, said smoke had caused her to have trouble breathing.

Badger characterized the house as a “total loss,” and said he couldn’t say what caused the fire, citing the ongoing police investigation.

The house was home to a woman and four children, Badger said. They were not home when the fire began. He said the Red Cross had been contacted by the department, but it was unclear whether the agency was helping the family.

Fire crews were on the scene until about 5:30 p.m. assisting the fire marshal, Badger said.

State police fire marshals in Butler and New Castle were not immediately available and did not return messages.
