Neubert: Lyndora Historic Walk, Run, Roll to raise money for neighborhood monument celebrating its past

Standard Steel Car Company brought industry to Butler in 1902.

Owner John Hansen also constructed basic housing for immigrant laborers and their families. He called the rows of company housing Lyndora to honor his daughter, Linda.

Drawn by the promise of a bright future, immigrants arrived from throughout Europe. They brought with them their traditions, religious practices and culture. Lyndora quickly became a thriving town.

This Saturday, Butler AM Rotary Club honors the heritage of Lyndora with the first Lyndora Historical Walk, Run, Roll 5K and 1-Mile, a celebration and a tour of the town.

Ashley McCandless, Rotary coordinator for the event, said the goal is to “bring people together through fitness, fun and service.” The event is family-friendly and open to runners and walkers, wheelchairs, strollers and dogs on leashes.

Parts of Lyndora include some steep hills, but McCandless said, with the help of race coordinator Joella Baker, they’ve marked a fairly level, two-looped 5K and out-and-back 1-mile courses. Both events start at the Blue Fields with a run across the field at the finish.

The 5K race starts at 8:30 a.m., and the 1-mile begins at 9:30. There’s a discount registration for those who wish to do both. Register online at runsignup.com/Race/PA/Lyndora/LyndoraHistoricalWalkRunRoll5KAnd1MileFunRun until noon Friday or at race start beginning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Commemorative T-shirts highlighting historic Lyndora will be available as supplies last.

McCandless expects 100-125 participants for this inaugural event. The 5K offers medals to first three male and female finishers in age groups from 14U through 60-plus. The 1-mile is just for fun. Everyone can share the post-race refreshments of bananas, water and granola bars.

If you’re not running, walking or rolling, you’re still invited to festivities Saturday morning at the Blue Fields. There’s a car show from 7:30-11 a.m. and food trucks: Lutz Coffee, Fizzy Flower Dirty Soda, Tanner’s Bakehouse and Shepherd’s Diner. Bring cash to enter the basket raffle with more than 20 baskets from community sponsors.

Lyndora Historical Walk, Run, Roll is a first for Butler AM Rotary Club. The club supports scholarships, youth programs and local charity initiatives in Butler County. Since its inception in 1997, the club has raised more than $850,000 in support of the community.

Your registration helps further the organization’s mission of “Service Above Self.” Proceeds from the event will help fund a monument commemorating historic Lyndora. Now in the beginning phases, the rotary club hopes to erect the monument next year.

Enjoying this beautiful Fall running weather? There are a few bibs left for Oct. 17’s Buffalo Creek Half Marathon. The event is known for its scenic, net downhill course and for its friendly volunteers. Due to logistical challenges, this year’s finish line will revert to the previous location across the bridge in Freeport.

Now in its 21st year, the race is the biggest fundraiser for Butler Freeport Community Trail. This year’s proceeds will fund grading and resurfacing of the trail between Butler and Bonniebrook Road.

There’s no race day registration, but you may sign up online at runsignup.com/Race/PA/Cabot/BuffaloCreekHalfMarathon. There are also limited volunteer positions available.
