County family makes best of wet vacation

A West Sunbury family’s Myrtle Beach, S.C., vacation got wet and wild over the past week as hurricane-related rainstorms caused flooding and kept them inside for days on end.

Vicky Mazzanti, whose family owns Mazzanti’s Beans and Cream in Center Township, said the most serious flooding at her family’s rental property at Long Bay Estates to the south of Myrtle Beach happened on Monday, after nearly a week of constant rainfall.

“Today we woke up to everything flooded,” Mazzanti said Monday.

She said the rain caused a nearby lake to overflow, flooding a road and their rental home’s pool and property.

Mazzanti said the family hasn’t been injured or lost any property in the flooding, and managed to avoid the hardest-hit areas around Myrtle Beach — something Mazzanti called “a God thing.”

She said the family usually vacations in the Garden City area south of Myrtle Beach, which was among the areas that had the most serious flooding.

The Mazzantis have been in South Carolina since last Saturday, but only have enjoyed about three days of the area’s characteristic sunny weather.

“We’ve been hunkered down in the house. The adults go out and walk the beach, (and) search for shells,” Mazzanti said. “This is how memories are made.”

It’s the Mazzantis first family vacation in nine years, she said, with 10 children and grandchildren making the trip to Myrtle Beach. They plan on staying until the end of this week, and hope to enjoy more sunny weather.

“The worst of it’s over,” Mazzanti said Monday. “It’s clearing today, and it’s supposed to get nicer each day.”
