Woman wants sidewalk removed
EVANS CITY — The owner of a duplex on Pioneer Road told borough council she wants the sidewalk in front of her house removed.
Sherri Tubridy on Oct. 5 said a complaint was filed with the borough in September because the cars parked on the sidewalk in front of a duplex owned by her and her husband block the sidewalk.
She said only five houses on Pioneer Road are fronted by the sidewalk, and there is nowhere else for her tenants to park.
“If we could do away with the sidewalk, that would solve the issue right there,” Tubridy said.
Borough solicitor Mike Gallagher said he is unsure whether the sidewalk can be removed. Longtime councilman Karl Kennedy recalled another resident several years ago asked if a sidewalk could be removed and was told that an existing sidewalk must be maintained.
Tubridy said when the state Department of Transportation repainted the center lines on Pioneer Road, which is a state road, the lines were moved almost two feet closer to her duplex.
Councilman John McKinney said a PennDOT representative said it was acceptable to park the cars with two wheels on the sidewalk and agreed to have the center lines painted farther from the sidewalk to allow room for parking.
“But instead, they moved them (closer),” McKinney said.
Tubridy said she even replaced the old sidewalk in front of the duplex with thicker concrete so cars could park there, but she wants it removed if cars cannot park on it.
She also pointed out the sidewalk only services a handful of homes.
“Two houses up, they don’t have a sidewalk,” Tubridy said.
Council President Lee Dyer said if removing the sidewalks is not an option, other alternatives would be sought.
Dyer said the council will wait to hear from Gallagher, who will determine whether the short sidewalk can be removed.
