Thomas L. Hughes, 94, of Butler, passed away Friday, Oct. 2, 2026, at the Lowrie Place Senior Living surrounded by family.

Born Aug. 3, 1932 in Butler, he was the son of the late Edwin J. Hughes and Anna M. (Stewart) Hughes.

Thomas was a graduate of Slippery Rock University where he earned his Bachelor's Degree; he earned a Master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and he received his Principal's Certificate at West Virginia University.

Mr. Hughes was an elementary school teacher and an elementary school principal for 34 years in the Lyndora, Center Township, Connoquenessing, and Meridian Elementary Schools, retiring in 1989. He was also a Christian school principal. He was a member of the United Commercial Travelers. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Butler where he served as a deacon, a Sunday schoolteacher, and he belonged to the church choir. He also conducted a Bible study at Mercer State Prison for 25 years.

Mr. Hughes is survived by his three sons, David (Donna) Hughes, of Butler, Mark (Joanne) Hughes, of Butler, Timothy (Elisa) Hughes of Wintergarden, Fla.; fourteen grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; and five nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Darlyne E. Yockey Hughes, whom he married on June 18, 1955, who passed away on Feb. 28, 2014; one daughter, Sharon Grooms; and one brother, E. Lynn Hughes.

HUGHES — Friends of Thomas L. Hughes, who died Friday, Oct. 2, 2026, will be received from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at THOMPSON-MILLER FUNERAL HOME, 124 East North St., Butler. A service will be held immediately following at 3 p.m. with Pastor Jonathan Hill officiating.

A committal service will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, at Greenlawn Burial Estates, 731 W. Old RTE 422, Butler.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Christian School, 221 New Castle St., Butler, PA 16001.
