Deep freeze blankets county
Residents in Butler County this morning woke up to extremely cold temperatures.
The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh at about 7:45 a.m. reported temperatures of 6 degrees in Slippery Rock, 5 degrees in Butler, 5 degrees in Cranberry Township, 4 degrees in Saxonburg and 4 degrees in Sarver.
Wind chills this morning were projected to be about 10 below zero, said NWS meteorologist Lee Hendricks. A wind chill of 12 below zero was reported shortly before 6 a.m. at the Butler County Airport.
Things will get a bit warmer after today.
“Warm is a relative term,” Hendricks said.
The low tonight will be 9 degrees. The high on Wednesday will be in the low 20s and the high on Friday will be in the mid-20s. Friday and Saturday, temperatures will be in the upper 20s. The temperature is projected to hit the low 30s on Sunday.
“That’s about as good as it gets,” Hendricks said.
Some of this could be dampened by the possibility of a snow storm on Friday. Hendricks said it is too early to know whether that is the case right now.
“At this point, there is a potential storm,” Hendricks said.
For now, he said there is no point in worrying about snow that day, and said the weather service will know more Thursday.
