Downingtown teachers to strike
DOWNINGTOWN, Pa. — Teachers in the Downingtown Area School District in Chester County say they will go on strike today.
School district officials say talks between the board and the Downingtown Education Association ended early Monday with no tentative contract agreement. The teachers' union rejected an offer of mandatory nonbinding arbitration.
A union spokesman said the district's final offer of increases of 4.5 percent in each of four years wasn't enough. The district said the average teacher's salary is just shy of $59,000.
