PITTSBURGH — A 12-year-old girl was fatally shot and her mother wounded Monday night when more than three dozen shots were fired into a house on the city's North Side, police said.

The bullets went through a door and a boarded-up window, hitting the girl and woman inside, police said. The 42-year-old mother was listed in stable condition at Allegheny General Hospital.

There were at least five others inside the house, which was the scene of another shooting two days earlier, officials said.

Pittsburgh Police Chief Nate Harper said he doesn't have a motive for the shooting.

CAMP HILL — The ousted head of a state prison from which a murderer escaped has retired, the state Department of Corrections said Monday.Marilyn Brooks' retirement date was effective Saturday, the department said. Her salary was nearly $112,000 a year. Brooks was removed as superintendent of the Albion state prison shortly after Malcolm Kysor hid in a garbage can and escaped Nov. 25. He remains at-large.Brooks, 54, had worked for the department for 25 years and had been at Albion since July 2004. She went on sick leave in December and missed several meetings with Corrections Secretary Jeffrey Beard to explain what happened the day Kysor escaped.An investigation found Brooks' staff was negligent and didn't conduct routine security measures.

WASHINGTON — A Washington County woman is accused of locking her 10-year-old grandson in a feces-filled dog crate for about 90 minutes.Police say 51-year-old Rhonda Lehman of Washington put the boy in the crate Saturday because the boy laced the family's drinks with lamp oil and household cleaner. The boy says he was angry at his family. Lehman is charged with child endangerment and terroristic threats.Police say Lehman also told a county agency if someone didn't come for the boy, she would bury him alive in the back yard.
