NEW YORK — Veteran TV political correspondent Bruce Morton, who covered the Vietnam War and the space program, died Friday in Washington, D.C., at age 83. He died from cancer at his home, CBS News said.

Morton spent 29 years at CBS, winning six Emmy Awards. He reported on the assassinations of Robert F. Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and covered the unrest in China’s Tiananmen Square in 1989.

He covered the presidential campaigns of Richard Nixon and Hubert Humphrey. He was a key figure on the CBS News convention and election night teams. He retired in 2006.
