It’s playoff time.

Well, sort of.

For three WPIAL teams, it is the postseason: Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic, Mars and Knoch.

For District 9 and District 10, there is still one more week left in the regular season, although one could argue the Moniteau-Union clash is a quasi-playoff game.

I have been in playoff form for most of the season, notching a 91-19 record through the first nine weeks. That’s the most wins for the Scoopster during the first nine weeks since I started prognosticating.

Of course, an asterisk could be placed on that stat. (Don’t worry. Scoop hasn’t been dipping into any PEDs.) I had the benefit of an extra nine games through those nine weeks because of the addition of Cardinal Wuerl.

But I’ll take it.

There are eight games on the docket this week, so if I hit on all eight, I’ll still be one short of my goal: 100 wins.

I’ll give it a try anyway.

On to the picks:

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 52, Avella 6 — The Trojans begin their march toward defending their WPIAL and PIAA titles with the No. 1 seed in Class A.

Cardinal Wuerl gets Avella, a 16th seed that has a 5-4 record, but also has a 70-7 loss on its resume.

I do have a soft-spot for Avella. They are the Eagles, after all.

Still, the Trojans are just too darn good.

Montour 23, Mars 15 — I’m conflicted about this one.

Part of me thinks Mars will win, in part because the Planets proved last week they were undaunted playing a tough team on the road.

But it is a game on the road.

The Planets’ defense is legit, but my gut still says Spartans.

West Allegheny 34, Knoch 10 — The Knights are a wildcard team, but still got a 14th seed because of the strength of the Greater Allegheny Conference.

West Allegheny is the third seed and the two-time WPIAL Class AAA defending champion.

Tough match-up for Knoch.

DuBois 34, Karns City 32 — Went with the home team again.

This game is a coin flip with both offenses piling up the points. This score may be conservative.

Union 31, Moniteau 29 — Went with the home team again.

The Golden Knights need this one to make the District 9 Class A playoffs and I think they’ll get it.

Cochranton 38, A-C Valley 18 — The Falcons have shown a lot of heart this season.

Slippery Rock 38, Wilmington 12 — The Rockets are in the Class AA playoffs. The Greyhounds are in the Class A playoffs — and are in a world of hurt. Wilmington will play few of its varsity players, so this could be a much more lopsided score than this.

Grove City 29, Northgate 14 — The Eagles snapped a 10-game losing streak last week and will close the season on a two-game winning streak.

Look out for Grove City next year — an early prediction.

Scoop could have thrown for 523 yards last week against the Colts.
