State university tuition going up 3.7%

HARRISBURG — Tuition is going up this fall at Pennsylvania's 14 state-owned universities, including Slippery Rock University.

The board of governors of the State System of Higher Education today voted to increase tuition for an undergraduate, resident student by $196 to $5,554 a year — an increase of 3.7 percent — for the 2009-10 school year.

The board also approved a $25 increase in the technology fees that all students must pay. The increase amounts to about 14 percent for an undergraduate, resident student.

The universities enroll more than 112,000 students across Pennsylvania.

The University of Pittsburgh also is raising tuition for Pennsylvania residents by 4 percent for the 2009-10 school year.

The university's trustees voted today on the tuition increase.

With the tuition increase, the 2009-10 school year will cost in-state residents $13,344 — up from $12,832. Out-of-state students will pay 2.5 percent more, with tuition increasing from $22,480 to $23,042.
