WPIAL, D9 golf final round set; Butler cross country sweeps tri-meet; Freeport volleyball wins: Highlights & scores
North Catholic’s Christopher Faber is four strokes off the lead after the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A Boys Individual Golf Championships.
Faber shot a 5-over 76 Tuesday at South Hills Country Club and is tied for eighth, with Charleroi’s Levi Large atop the leaderboard at 1-over. Faber had consecutive birdies on Nos. 6 and 7 and a third on the second hole.
Another Trojan, Colin Campbell, ended the first round in a tie for 29th at 12-over to also qualify for the final round, which will be held Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Oakmont Country Club. Three Freeport golfers missed the cut, with Jackson Kane the closest, one stroke shy at 14-over.
District 9 championship — Moniteau finished fifth out of eight teams in the District 9 Class 2A Boys Team Golf Championship on Monday at Bavarian Hills Golf Course with a total of 345. St. Marys won with a 322.
In the individual leaderboards, A-C Valley/Union’s Joe Rapp leads after one round with an impressive 5-under 66, eight shots clear of second place. The final round will be held Saturday with the top 16 from Monday qualifying. That group includes Moniteau’s Brennan Kelly (t-11th, 9-over) and ACVU’s Koen Strauser (t-13th, 10-over). Six golfers in Class 2A make the PIAA championship.
Cecelia Schlegel and Maggie Conger scored second-half goals to hand Freeport a 3-2 comeback win over North Catholic in a game that was started Sept. 9 but suspended due to storms. The final 10 minutes of the first half and all of the second were played Monday. Schlegel finished with two goals and an assist, and Ella McConville had two assists for the Yellowjackets.
Knoch 3, Burrell 3 — Luke Myers scored twice and Walker Stewart had the other as the Knights played to a tie. Ryan Karkowski saved eight shots.
Freeport def. Leechburg — The Yellowjackets earned the win via forfeit, according to Freeport.
It was a tri-meet sweep for Butler to improve to 3-0 this year on the road against Pine-Richland and Central Catholic (boys) and Oakland Catholic (girls). Brendan Eicher won the boys race in 16:30, leading the Tornado to wins of 23-35 against PCC and 15-50 against the Rams. Avery Sintz ran a 20:14 to win the girls race and lead Butler to wins of 17-41 (OC) and 15-50 (P-R). Macie McLister was second for Butler’s girls (20:44) and Kyra Olivares third (21:16), and Camden Schaefer finished third for the boys (17:00).
Grove City sweeps Slippery Rock — Sophia Gearhart ran a 20:24 and Lydia Springirth 20:27 to finish second and third in the Rocket girls’ 23-36 loss to their rivals. The top SR boys finisher in a 15-50 loss was Zachary Geisner (19:25) in eighth. The girls are 2-2, the boys 1-3.
Jayme Radvan had a team-high 16 kills to lead Freeport to a 3-1 win (25-11, 25-13, 21-25, 25-9) over Burrell. Evie Tola and Brynleigh Paga had 12 and 10 kills, respectively, for the Yellowjackets.
Hampton 3, Knoch 2 — The Knights dropped a tight one 22-25, 25-12, 25-16, 21-25, 17-15 despite 20 assists, 11 kills and four blocks from Maelan Bajuszik. Emersyn Jones had 21 digs and nine kills. Knoch fell to 6-4 (5-2 section).
Keystone 3, A-C Valley 1 — Gianna Louise had 11 kills and eight digs in a loss by set scores of 25-14, 17-25, 25-22, 25-16. Arianna Adams recorded 24 digs.
Corry 3, Slippery Rock 0 — Kasey Yeager had seven kills for the Rockets in a 25-15, 25-7, 26-24 loss. Lexi Caldwell dished out 13 assists.
Clarion-Limestone 3, Moniteau 0 — Emily Matz led the way with 11 digs and seven kills in a 25-20, 25-22, 25-19 loss, while Sayge Brunst recorded 13 digs and three kills.
Clarion 3, Union 0 — Lilly Hayden had 19 digs in a 25-9, 25-8, 25-13 loss.
