Jack Steineman, North Catholic cross country lead the way at PIAA Foundation: Roundup
North Catholic had a big day Saturday at Big Spring High School in the PIAA Cross Country Foundation Race.
The girls claimed silver (116 points) in the Class 2A race, and the boys finished third in 2A. Jack Steineman had the best individual finish locally, capturing silver in 15:55.3 behind Quaker Valley’s Jonah Montagnese at the site of the November PIAA Cross Country Championships.
Four Trojanettes girls finished in the top 30. Maggie Killian (19:53.8, 12th), Nora Narwold (19:58.4, 14th), Anna Morris (20:28.7, 21st) and Annie Puhalla (20:54.5, 29th) led the way. Colton Ginsburg finished 25th in 17:18.8 for the NC boys, who earned 192 points.
Also in 2A, David Kristine’s 16:38.7 was good for seventh, and John Hart finished 15th in 16:53.9 to lead Freeport (23rd). And the girls finished 16th, led by Elizabeth Wesolosky (21:59.3, 57th) and Elizabeth Schwarz (22:44.6, 77th).
In boys 3A, Butler came in seventh. Senior Brendan Eicher finished 32nd in 16:42.0. Landon Slear was 51st in 17:10.0. Seneca Valley senior Ian Wahl crossed in 16:26.9 to finish 22nd and lead the Raiders to an eighth-place finish. Chase LaPaglia was 60th in 17:14.6. And Scott Kelly led Mars (16th) with a run of 17:08.7 for 49th, followed by Evan Lewis (17:12.0, 55th).
In 3A girls, Mars’ Hailey Long ran an 18:12.3 to finish fourth overall. Freshman Norah Sondej finished 29th in 20:08.3, and the Planets came in 14th. Butler finished 19th, led by Avery Sintz’s 20:32.6 (41st). Macie McLister finished 59th with a time of 20:58.8. Paige Damico’s 21:01.3 paced Seneca Valley (21st) and was good for 61st individually. Sally McLean was 87th in 21:32.7.
Sharpsville’s Blue Devil Invitational — Carter French led the Butler County contingent in this one with a third-place finish (16:52), and Knoch’s boys finished fourth (180 points). Connor McCool finished eighth in 17:11. Moniteau’s Peyton Beck finished 15th in 17:43.
In the girls’ race, Moniteau’s Alexis Kirschner ran a 21:45 for eighth and led the Warriors to 11th. Knoch’s Natalie Zolinas finished 15th (21:59) and Aubrey SPencer came in 19th (22:16).
Noah Simmons and Cullin Forbes scored to lead Butler to a 2-0 weekend win over Knoch. Thad Mago record the Tornado’s shutout, and Jude Perhacs and Cade Hanley had assists.
Avery Singer recorded a hat trick, and Butler went on to shut out Knoch 5-0. Alaina Lucia Leyland had a goal and assist for the Tornado, who also got a goal from Alaina Garbinski.
Despite 16 kills and 13 digs from Emily Matz, Moniteau fell 3-1 to Grove City (set scores: 29-27, 25-21, 22-25, 25-20). Maddy Eury had 22 assists and 25 digs, and Sayge Brunst had 22 digs, six kills and three aces for the Warriors.
Summit Academy amassed just 94 total yards of offense and was shut out for the third week in a row in an 84-0 loss to visiting Laurel on Saturday, falling to 0-5. Kamarii Coleman led the Knights with 40 passing yards (5 of 12, two interceptions) and 52 rushing yards on 10 carries.
