At Shenyang, China, Olympic title contenders Brazil and Germany tied 0-0 in the Group F opener in women's soccer at the Beijing Games.

The Germans kept FIFA player of the year Marta from threatening during most of today's match, but failed to capitalize on their own scoring opportunities. Sandra Smisek hit the crossbar with a header in the 23rd minute, while Renata Costa hit the post with a header for Brazil in the 63rd.

In Qinhuangdao, China, midfielders Aya Miyama and Homare Sawa scored second-half goals to rally Japan to a 2-2 draw with New Zealand.Midfielder Kirsty Yallop tapped in a cross in the 33rd minute to give New Zealand its first goal ever at the Olympics. Amber Hearn then converted a penalty after halftime to double the lead.But Japan, which dominated possession throughout, pulled one back in the 72nd, when midfielder Aya Miyama slotted a penalty kick just inside the post.Homare Sawa then tied it up for the Japanese with a brilliant goal in the 86th. Miyama curled a free kick in from the right side that Sawa jumped up and knocked with her right foot just inside the near post.

At Tianjin, China, Canada wore down Argentina to win its Olympic debut 2-1 today, getting a goal in each half and using a significant size advantage to subdue the South Americans.Coming out of her center back position, Candace Chapman put Canada ahead in the 27th minute. She ran onto a corner that was deflected more than 30 yards from goal and struck a right-footed volley that skipped inside the left post. Kara Lang added the insurance in the 72nd, heading Rhian Wilkinson's free kick from 10 yards.Canada took control after Chapman's goal, capitalizing on an average advantage of 14 pounds in the starting lineups.
