The U.S. team's time of 3 minutes, 8.24 seconds shattered its previous mark of 3:12.23 set the night before in preliminaries. Phelps, meanwhile, qualified for the 200-meter freestyle final.
RULE BRITTANIAWith a furious final kick, Rebecca Adlington pulled off an improbable comeback to defeat favored American Katie Hoff in the women's 400-meter freestyle, and become Britain's first female gold medalist in swimming in 48 years.
