SHICKSHINNY — Teachers are on strike today in Luzerne County's Northwest Area School District.
District negotiating committee member Daryl Morgan said talks Monday went well but differences remain over wages.
Teachers have been working without a contract since August 2005, and they point to a wage freeze in the last two years of their previous contract.
District officials point to increasing costs of health insurance for the teachers, who so far do not pay a share of their premiums.
MUNHALL — Police said they found weapons, bomb-making equipment and explosives in the home of a Pittsburgh-area high school math teacher.Sixty-two-year-old Nicholas Borrelli and his wife, 45-year-old Linda Borrelli, face a variety of weapons-related charges.Munhall police said it took them from Friday afternoon until 2 a.m. Saturday to remove dozens of boxes of rifles, handguns and bomb-making equipment from the couple's home. The Allegheny County bomb squad helped remove the dynamite and other bomb-related materials.Police said three marijuana plants also were found.Officials at Bishop Canevin High School said Borrelli has been placed on paid leave. Pittsburgh's Catholic diocese said Borrelli has taught at the high school since 1990.
HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania's Democratic Party continues to build on enrollment gains that have expanded its membership to more than 4 million — a record for either party — according to updated figures released Monday by state elections officials.The number of Democrats surged to at least 4,119,213, an increase of more than 235,000 — about 6 percent — since last fall's election. Republican Party enrollment shrank by 1.5 percent to 3,197,586, while the number of independents slipped by 3 percent to 953,562,
