Dorothy Williams, 81, headed NAACP youth in Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH — Dorothy Williams, a woman who headed the Pittsburgh NAACP's youth chapters in the 1960s, has died.
Williams died Saturday, a day after her 81st birthday.
She was Pittsburgh Public Schools teacher for 40 years and in 1960 was asked to head the civil rights organization's youth chapter in 1960. Between then and 1966, Williams also headed Pittsburgh NAACP chapters for young adults and students at the University of Pittsburgh.
Ralph Proctor, one of the members of those chapters, say Williams led demonstrations that broke down job discrimination barriers for young blacks downtown.
Her funeral is Friday.
