PITTSBURGH — Allegheny County's drink and car rental taxes have collected more than $21 million through July, which puts them ahead of pace to meet funding obligations for mass transit.
County Treasurer John Weinstein says nearly $19 million is from the 10 percent drink tax. He projects both taxes will bring in $40 million to $45 million by the end of the year.
The county approved the drink tax and $2-a-day tax on car rentals in December to fund the county's $30 million subsidy of The Port Authority of Allegheny County.
A spokesman for the county chief executive says taxes collected above the $30 million can be used for transit systems and county roads and bridges.
PITTSBURGH — A former state lawmaker convicted of conflict of interest and a bizarre fake anthrax threat is in jail.At least for now.Last month, Allegheny County Judge Jeffrey Manning ruled Jeff Habay did not deserve to go to jail after losing his office, his pension and his reputation.Instead, Manning said Habay can serve his six to 12-month sentence in a halfway house. But Judge Lester Nauhaus, who heard the other case against Habay, let a four to eight-month jail sentence stand in the fake anthrax case stand.Because Habay must serve both sentences at the same time, he reported to jail Friday instead of the halfway house.Nauhaus may be asked to reconsider the jail sentence when he returns from vacation Aug. 11.
