Father, son cause oil spill in forest
LUDLOW, Pa. — About 45,000 gallons of oil are contaminating the Allegheny National Forest, more than four times the initial estimate.
Meanwhile, police have filed more serious charges against the father and son team accused of causing the contamination, leading a judge to set bail at $500,000.
Police say 42-year-old Andrew Horton dropped off his son, Christopher, 22, at oil tanks owned by Snyder Brothers Inc. Police say the younger Horton opened the valves, spilling oil into the forest and contaminating a stream that runs into a reservoir.
Police say the men are disgruntled former Snyder employees.
The state Department of Environmental Protection is working to clean the forest.
