Turnpike plaza slated to close for 9-month rehab
NEW STANTON — The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is closing the New Stanton service plaza for nine months for reconstruction.
The service plaza, which only serves westbound traffic, will close Wednesday morning. It's expected to reopen by next Memorial Day with more food choices and modern facilities.
The closure of the Westmoreland County plaza means there will be no plaza west of the North Somerset plaza on the turnpike's main portion.
New Stanton will be the fifth plaza to be rebuilt under a public-private partnership with HMS Host Corp. of Bethesda, Md., and Sunoco of Philadelphia.
HMS Host is paying $100 million to renovate or rebuild 18 of the turnpike's 21 plazas in return for a 30-year lease on the properties.
