Pittsburgh's 3,500 public housing apartments are getting energy-saving heating and cooling units as part of a $25 million improvement project.

Geothermal wells are now being drilled near the 501-unit Northview Heights housing project as part of the improvement project by Minneapolis-based Honeywell. Housing officials say the units will pay for themselves in energy savings.

In the summer, heat pumps carry warmth from the air into water which is pumped into the ground and cooled by the ground's near constant 55-degree temperature. The cooled water cools air which is pumped into the units. In colder weather, the water's relative warmth will be used to heat the air.

The University of Pittsburgh will go ahead with $43 million in renovations, construction projects and upgrades, including of its sports complex.The board of trustees' property and facilities committee approved the projects on Friday.The upgrade to the sports complex will cost an estimated $14.3 million. It will include new baseball, softball, soccer, track and intramural facilities.The university says the projects will create about 300 jobs.The committee also approved four leases.
