Gabe's coming to old Kmart

The Kmart store in Butler's Pullman Square was closed by Sears Holdings in 2017. The city on Monday issued a building permit to a new retailer.
Retailer's doors may open in 6 to 8 weeks

The former Kmart store site in Pullman Plaza could be hopping with shoppers in four to six weeks.

John Evans, the city's zoning officer, confirmed that a building permit was issued Monday morning to Gabe's.

Gabe's has 107 stores in 13 states.

The retailer sells discounted clothing and fashion accessories, shoes, housewares, home decor, bedding, pet supplies and other items.

New merchandise arrives in the store each week, so items are constantly changing, according to the Gabe's website.

Evans said the store will fill the entire space, which he said is close to 30,000 square feet.

Because the store is remaining a retailer and not changing uses, no improvements or work was required on the building by city officials.

Evans said Gabe's will modify the store's vestibule and reconfigure shelving and other features to create its branded layout.

“I think it's fantastic,” Evans said. “We are very fortunate to have a major chain like that, that wants to go in there.”

He said he thinks Gabe's wants to have the doors open in four to six weeks.

Kmart moved out in the summer of 2017 as one of 49 locations closed nationwide by the former retail giant due to lagging sales.

Representatives of Gabe's did not return requests for comment.
