A judge refused to let a man leave the state to visit his parents in Michigan while he awaits trial on charges he smashed $15,000 worth of windows during the Group of 20 economic summit.

David Japenga, 20, who now lives in Pittsburgh, is awaiting trial on criminal mischief and other charges. His attorney denies Japenga broke the windows during G-20 protests in September.

Japenga is from Oakland, Calif., but moved to Pittsburgh a few months before the summit to work at a food bank.

Japenga had been jailed, but was freed after someone posted $15,000 bail. But as a condition of his release, Allegheny County Judge Jeffrey Manning ordered Japenga not to leave Pennsylvania and refused Monday to grant a special exception for the holiday visit.

A Pittsburgh police sergeant took time off through the end of the year while officials investigate charges he slapped his former girlfriend so hard he dislocated her jaw.Eugene Hlavac, 41, was charged with aggravated assault in the incident Friday at his home. Police said Hlavac was upset because the woman was late picking up their son, making him late for work.Police said the officer talked the woman into keeping the incident secret and, at first, they told hospital officials she fell. She later reported the alleged slapping to police after talking with her family.Hlavac is charged with aggravated assault.
