PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh's police chief suspended a sergeant for five days pending his eventual firing for allegedly slapping his former girlfriend so hard he dislocated her jaw.

Chief Nate Harper made that decision following a 90-minute disciplinary hearing Tuesday for Eugene Hlavac Jr., 42. The sergeant is awaiting trial on a simple assault charge in the Dec. 18 incident.

Authorities said Hlavac slapped the 23-year-old woman because she was late picking up their son, making him late for work.

Hlavac's attorney has said the sergeant was attacked and merely defending himself.

MILTON — A woman accused of kidnapping her own sons after their father was awarded custody about 12 years ago was arrested in central Pennsylvania and faces extradition to Spokane, Wash.The 48-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday at her home in Milton, Pa., where she was going by the name Ann Thompson, but police said she was known in Washington as Jill Haugen. Police said she fled with her sons when the were 4 and 5 years old and has been living in Milton for two years.The woman said she is a victim of domestic violence.
