PITTSBURGH — Four paid interns who worked for state Sen. Jane Orie, R-40th, deny allegations of a former colleague who said illegal campaigning was done for the lawmaker's sister.

The comments by four former interns appeared in a Pittsburgh newspaper Thursday after another ex-intern's accusations were reported Wednesday.

Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr. launched a grand jury investigation looking into whether campaigning was done on the public's time for the lawmaker's sister, Justice Joan Orie Melvin, who was recently elected to the state Supreme Court.

PHILADELPHIA — A Pennsylvania state trooper who has overseen sobriety checkpoints on Philadelphia area highways is on desk duty and facing a drunken driving charge.Pennsylvania State Police said Cpl. John Quigg, 47, of Wyndmoor, was off duty when he crashed his own car into a guardrail on Route 422 in Upper Merion on Dec. 17.According to court documents, police say there was an open bottle of alcohol in the car and Quigg was unresponsive and appeared intoxicated. The results of blood tests are pending.Quigg, an accident reconstruction specialist based at the Belmont state police barracks in Philadelphia, has a court hearing Feb. 5.His attorney, Tim Woodward, said his client "made a bad decision that he deeply regrets."

BANGOR — A teacher's aide was asked to resign after a nude photo of her circulated among students.The high school aide apparently left her phone unattended at a nonschool event, when someone found it and started distributing the photo.Bangor Area Superintendent John Reinhart said he will seek to terminate the six-year employee if she doesn't resign. He said her ability to work with district youngsters is compromised. She has not been at work for several days.The woman's name is not being released, and Reinhart doesn't know if she has a lawyer. The district is asking parents to check students' phones for the image.
