PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh has fired a police officer accused of slapping his ex-girlfriend.

Forty-two-year-old Sgt. Eugene Hlavac Jr. was fired Thursday. He's charged with assault for allegedly dislocating the woman's jaw because she didn't pick up their son on time, making him late for work on Dec. 18.

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl says the city has as zero-tolerance domestic abuse policy.

The Fraternal Order of Police says it will challenge the firing, noting Hlavac is presumed innocent because the case hasn't come to trial.

A judge earlier this week ordered Hlavac to stay away from his ex-girlfriend for three years and awarded her custody of their 3-year-old son.
