Expired inspection leads to drug charges for man, woman
A Kittanning woman and a Butler man face drug charges after they were caught with a dozen stamp bags of suspected narcotics and other contraband following a traffic stop last month in Butler, authorities said.
City police Thursday charged Kaitlyn N. Johnston, 23, and Jory C. Melik, 30, with misdemeanor drug possession.
Police said they were on patrol around 11 a.m. Sept. 13 when they spotted a pickup truck pass them on West Quarry Street with an expired inspection sticker. Johnston was driving the truck, which was pulled over at Center and Walker avenues.
Melik, who was riding in the truck, appeared to be impaired on drugs, police said. Officers called for a tow truck because both Johnston and Melik had suspended driver's licenses.
An inventory check of the vehicle, according to charging documents, turned up a drawstring back pack that contained 12 stamp bags of unspecified drugs and a plastic baggie corner with suspected crack cocaine.
Additionally, the bag contained 18 empty stamp bags, two metal spoons with suspected drug residue and three small scales.
In the center console, police said, were nine Suboxone strips and two crack pipes.
Police charged Johnson and Melik both with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.
Johnston is also charged with driving with a suspended license, driving an unregistered vehicle and driving a vehicle without valid inspection.
