ERIE — A power plant project that would use old tires to generate electricity is moving to Crawford County after meeting opposition in Erie.

Officials at Erie Renewable Energy announced their decision Tuesday to quit pursuing a plan to build a 90-megawatt electric plant after a three-year fight with residents and officials.

The company says it will try to build the plant to an industrial park in Greenwood Township, Crawford County.

Erie Renewable Energy officials say they plan to begin construction on the plant in October. It will take two years to get up and running.

Company officials say the $375 million plant would consume about 900 tons of waste tires per day and provide enough power for about $75,000 homes.
