Rate for tax collectors increased

The 2022 compensation rate for the county's many tax collectors to collect county taxes was set on Wednesday by county commissioners.

The tax collectors received a slight increase per property taxed, which will increase what the county pays for tax collection by between $30,000 and $35,000.

Per the ordinance approved by the commissioners, tax collectors will earn $4 for every tax card billed up to the first 5,000 for the county tax, and $2 per card for each card after that.

Collectors will earn $5 for every county supplemental or interim tax card.

All tax collectors will earn a minimum of $550.

Each collector must send reminder letters for all unpaid county taxes no later than Dec. 1 of each year.

According to the ordinance, tax collectors will be paid 70% of their compensation in April, 20% in June and 10% in December, along with any payment due for supplemental tax cards.

Commissioner Kim Geyer said the commissioners have met with many municipalities' tax collectors in the past six months regarding the job of tax collector.

“I have a great appreciation for the work they do and the time they invest,” Geyer said.

Leslie Osche, commissioners chairwoman, said she has a new appreciation for the job of tax collector after spending time with them.

Commissioner Kevin Boozel said a few small municipalities have turned the job of local tax collector over to the county, as no candidates have run for the elected position and no others agreed to be appointed to the job.

The new compensation rates are effective Jan. 1, 2022.
