Census: Butler County continues to grow
Butler County's population has grown since 2010, with an increase of just under 10,000 people, data released Thursday from the 2020 census shows.
The total population of Butler County is 193,763, up from 2010 numbers at 183,862 and 174,083 in 2000. Growth this census cycle in the county outpaced the past census cycle slightly by a measure of 122 people.
Butler County's population is 92.5% white, which is 4% lower than the estimate from the 2019 Population Estimates program. In 2010, the county population was 96.6% white. Populations of Black, Asian and Native American residents all increased very slightly over the past 10 years.
Total housing units are at 85,019, up from the most recent American Community Survey in 2019 at 84,873. Occupied units are at 78,727; vacant are at 6,292.
County Commissioners Chairwoman Leslie Osche said that there wasn't any “great ah-ha” in the results at the county level.“We've basically seen what we expected to see,” she said. “I don't think it was a surprise, particularly as you watch the explosion of housing in the southern part of the county.”She said that Butler County's attractive tax base is likely to be attracting more residents.“We led the state in housing starts for a while,” she said. “I think we are seeing the results of that, and the result of migration for tax dollars. People are looking for more affordable places to live, and we seem to have found the sweet spot for that.”
