PITTSBURGH — A teenager fleeing a house where a woman had reported a home invasion was killed Monday in a shootout with police near a public housing complex, authorities said.

Pittsburgh Police Chief Nate Harper said the woman called 911 at about 3:15 p.m. to report three intruders in her home. When police arrived, they saw at least two people running from the home, he said.

Officers chased the suspects on foot and by car. About a block away, the teenager turned toward police with a weapon and started firing, Harper said. The officers fired back and killed the teenager.

The Allegheny Medical Examiner's Office identified the boy as 15-year-old Jerome Williams.

"Any time a life is taken, it is a tragedy," Harper said.

Police said two officers were placed on administrative leave, which is standard practice after such shootings.
