EIGHTY FOUR — Police have arrested a truck driver believed to have been driving a rig that damaged an Interstate 70 bridge that had to be demolished.

State police said 49-year-old Tony Kyle of Texas was arrested Tuesday at a highway rest stop and will be charged with several summary traffic violations. The overpass in Somerset Township, Washington County, was damaged Monday when authorities say Kyle's truck struck the bridge then took off. Police say Kyle's truck was carrying an oversized piece of equipment.

PennDOT inspectors who checked out the bridge said it needed to come down immediately. The bridge was demolished Tuesday morning and traffic had to be stopped in both directions.

HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania Farm Bureau is applauding a new state law that loosens restrictions on trucks used as farm vehicles.Gov. Ed Rendell signed legislation that increases the weight limit for farm-use trucks from 17,000 pounds to 26,000 pounds.That'll make it possible for children under 18 to operate them, and less likely that farmers will have to complete paperwork required of commercial trucks or obtain regular medical certification.The new weight limit pertains to trucks, plus whatever trailer or equipment they tow. PennDOT had imposed the lower weight limit earlier this year. Before that, there was no limit on farm trucks in Pennsylvania.
