PITTSBURGH New nutritional guidelines up for review suggest that schools allow fewer birthday celebrations inside Pennsylvania's classrooms.

The state Board of Education is recommending that schools strongly encourage parents to offer no more than a single homemade sweet at school parties. The state also wants classrooms to consider allowing one combined birthday celebration per month as a way to preserve instructional time.

A Pittsburgh newspaper reported Monday the rules would allow the state to withhold or rescind reimbursements, but the education department says that applies if schools violate nutritional standards for school meals.

The state Department of Education issued nutritional guidelines for classroom parties in 2006. Those encouraged districts to trim the number of sugary snacks available and include fruits and vegetables.

CORAOPOLIS The Humane Society is offering a $2,500 reward for information about whoever decapitated five deer found near Interstate 79 west of Pittsburgh.The Humane Society of the United States and The Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust is working with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, which is investigating the poaching. Commission investigators suspect the deer were decapitated so their heads could be used to cheat as trophies in hunting contests.
