Swindell outruns other Outlaws

BUFFALO TWP - Sammy Swindell displayed a remake of his 1992 Sprint car Tuesday that was a winner at the World of Outlaws at Lernerville Speedway.

This year's model turned out to be just as successful.

Swindell took the lead from Steve Kinser on the 24th lap in the World of Outlaws Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup feature and went on to the victory, which earned him the $30,000 prize.

Swindell also won the Outlaws race at Lernerville in 2000, but having the 1992 model there might have rubbed off.

"Our guys did a great job putting it together," said Swindell. "It's quite a bit different than what we ran here. We had a great car."

With his son and friend - both teenagers - working as the crew, Swindell lauded them, his family and support staff.

"We've been working hard. We've got a good car," said Swindell who now has eight top-five finishes and 10 top-10 finishes during Outlaws events at Lernerville Speedway. "We've been running quick and we've had some bad luck.

"We've had things go wrong that shouldn't go wrong. I've got to thank those two kids that helped put the car together," he added.

Greg Hodnett of Memphis, Tenn., was the pole-sitter after posting the best time trial at 12.951 seconds, the only driver to break 13 seconds, and winning the first dash event, but he lost the lead to Mark Kinser of Oolitic, Ind., in the opening lap.

A caution on that lap forced the field to restart, but Kinser quickly took the lead on the restart lap.

Kinser enjoyed the lead for the first 13 laps before Steve Kinser of Bloomington, Ind., wrestled it away.

Swindell took the lead for good after the 24th lap, just before a caution. He was just ahead of Steve Kinser, Mark Kinser and Greg Hodnett, and the race ended with drivers in the same order.

Swindell was able to build on his lead, despite one more caution through 31 laps.

Ironically, Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell - ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, on the Outlaws career feature victory list - battled at the Sarver track back on May 25, when it was Kinser who passed Swindell in the 35-lap race for the win.

On Tuesday, it was Swindell's turn.

"I had a bit faster line that (Kinser) ran. I had a tighter line," said Swindell. "I kept looking for the top. That's the way to go here. I didn't have much pressure from behind.

"This track's been good to me. If I don't win, I've been in the top three. It's a fun racetrack. It's different on both ends. You have to pay attention. You have to use all the controls. Some others, it's like a highway," Swindell added.

"I caught a group of lap cars and had to spin my tires a little. The tires were hot," Mark Kinser said.

"I think Sammy was the class of the field. I think Steve's nose was bent. I could keep up with Steve, but I couldn't keep up with Sammy," he added.

Swindell also had a problem with lap traffic.

"The one time, I hit Ed Lynch Jr. and (Craig) Dollansky. Ed was running on top and I ran right on top of Craig. I had to wait.

"It was pretty slow … and I was a little worried," he added.

Driving in this particular race is always appealing to Swindell and not just for the winner's check.

"Don was a great guy," said Swindell. "He always had a smile on his face. He was one of the best promoters to run with."

Notes:

In all, 46 cars were in the pits and 26 started the final. … Ed Lynch Jr. of Apollo, who won this race in 2002, had the fifth-fastest time trial but didn't qualify in the heats and had to work his way through the B-Main. He led the race handily for 10 laps before losing power. He dropped out but was able to return for the feature race as a provisional starter. He started in the back of the pack and never recovered. He finished in 19th place.
