Just for openers

A few notes from the Pirates' 2-1 Opening Day victory Monday at PNC Park:

The Pirates won their home opener for only the second time in 11 years.

The Pirates are 6-0 against the Phillies in season openers.

Kip Wells was the Pirates' sixth different Opening Day starting pitcher in as many years, following Kris Benson, Ron Villone, Todd Ritchie, Jason Schmidt and Francisco Cordoba.

The H.J. Heinz Corporation Foundation Community Service Award was presented to the Roberto Clemente Foundation, which serves disadvantaged young people in the Pittsburgh area. Accepting the award were Vera Clemente and her sons, Roberto Jr. and Luis Clemente.

June Schaut, executive assistant to Pirates CEO Kevin McClatchy and an employee of the club since 1969, received the Pride of the Pirates Award.

Five rookies - Jose Castillo, Humberto Cota, J.J. Davis, John Grabow and Mike Johnston - are on the Pirates' Opening Day roster. There were none last year.

Only 11 players returned from last year's Opening Day roster.

Jose Mesa was the only non-roster invitee to make the Pirate roster. Mesa's save now gives him at least one save against every current major league club.

Jason Kendall made his ninth consecutive Opening Day start at catcher. Only George Gibson (1906-15) made more consecutive Opening Day starts behind the plate for the Pirates.
