Hurricane leaves Chiefs, Dolphins scrambling

MIAMI — An approaching hurricane left Miami Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas with no time to talk to reporters.

“I’ve got two days of film work to do in one,” an apologetic, frantic Thomas said Thursday through a team spokesman.

With Hurricane Wilma projected to strike South Florida this weekend, the NFL switched the Dolphins’ game against Kansas City to tonight, two days earlier than originally scheduled.

The change left both teams scrambling to complete preparations. The Chiefs were scheduled to fly this morning to South Florida.

“It would stink to have to travel like that,” Miami defensive end David Bowens said.

One consolation for the Chiefs: By Sunday, when Wilma is expected to strike Florida, they’ll be long gone.

“They couldn’t have picked a better team to send down there and play well — that’s the way we’re approaching it,” Kansas City coach Dick Vermeil said. “We’ll go down there and play our best football game of the year. The guys are in a good frame of mind. They accept it. We would have liked it to be a different way, but we have no choice.”

It’s a new experience for the Chiefs, but all too familiar for the Dolphins, who’ve had three home games rescheduled because of a hurricanes since the start of the 2004 season.
