PITTSBURGH — Officials with the Port Authority of Allegheny County and the union representing its transit workers say they’ll try to resume talks aimed at erasing a $30 million deficit that has prompted steep service cuts.

The agreement resulted after Allegheny County Council held a special meeting Wednesday night on the 15-percent cuts that have angered the union and some of the Pittsburgh-area’s 220,000 transit commuters who lost 29 bus routes, and saw dozens more served by fewer buses this week.

County Executive Dan Onorato wants to erase the deficit with $10 million in fare hikes and increased county subsidies and $20 million in worker concessions that the union says are too steep. Even Port Authority CEO Steve Bland says the long-term solution isn’t union concessions but rather a better, dedicated funding source still to be determined by the state Legislature.
