Rains curtail Lernerville season opener

BUFFALO TWP - It was over almost as quickly as it started.

Opening night of the dirt track racing season ended Friday night at Lernerville Speedway after just two Sprint car heat races.

Rod George of Kittanning and Ed Lynch Jr. of Apollo won those respective 10-lap events before heavy rains descended upon the track and forced cancellation of the program.

Lernerville will have a non-points Fab Four race card next Friday before now beginning the points season April 15.

"Hey, it was quick, but I'll take it," George said of his heat win. "The last three opening nights here, I had DNF's."

George finished second to Lynch Jr. in the Sprint points race last year and returns this season with a new frame, a Maxim chassis and a switch to Hoosier tires.

"You have to find ways to keep up," George said. "Some of our stuff was out-dated and we got some people helping us on the tires.

"Always … You want to get a little faster."

George easily beat runner-up Mike Shearer of Freeport to the checkered flag in his heat race. Lynch had a healthy lead over runner-up Kevin Schaeffer of Kittanning while crossing the finish line as well.

Lynch is Lernerville's all-time Sprint feature victory leader with 74 and is two-time defending points champion here.

"This night was all about shaking rust off the driver," he said. "It felt good just getting out there on the track."

As for the Sprint division at Lernerville this season, Lynch anticipates Schaeffer and George being improved.

"Rod has all new stuff and Kevin finished eighth in a big race two weeks ago," Lynch said. "This track is always tricky and with the cone (single lane) restarts, it can be tough coming up through sometimes.

"I take nothing for granted. The pill draw means a lot. You never know what can happen."

Rain checks from Friday's program will be honored the next two weeks.

In other Lernerville news:

There were 91 cars in the pits Friday night.

Carl Bowser of Sarver drove a No. 10 Sprint car, but did not finish among the top five in his heat.

Carl McKinney of Cranberry Township - Limited Late Model points champion at Sharon Speedway last year - is driving a No. 6M Late Model this season.

Jared Miley, Western Pennsylvania Rookie of the Year last season in Limited Late Models, is driving Late Model No. 99 this season.

Carl Murdick of Butler is back for his 38th season driving the No. 6 Modified. He is the only driver to compete at Lernerville during every year of the track's existence.
