Man charged with pointing gun at girlfriend, friend

JEFFERSON TWP — A township man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly pointing a loaded pistol at his girlfriend and another woman.

No one was injured in the incident on Rockdale Road in Jefferson Township, but 23-year-old Benjamin B. Dennis ended up behind bars on felony assault and other charges.

The victims showed up at the police barracks in Butler Township around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday to allege that the defendant had threatened them with a handgun.

Dennis' girlfriend said they had been arguing recently and that he had been “acting abnormal,” according to charging documents.

Concerned for the defendant's welfare, she said that she went out driving with the other victim to look for him. They eventually found him in a pull-off area by a pond on the 100 block of Rockdale Road.

The girlfriend recounted that she got out of the vehicle and approached him in his vehicle. He allegedly exited the vehicle with a pistol.

“Dennis then racked the gun,” documents said, “placing a round in the chamber and began yelling at (his girlfriend).”

The other woman, who stayed in the vehicle that she was driving, allegedly told police that she heard the defendant threaten to ram their vehicle with his if they didn't leave.

The women left, but returned. The defendant and his girlfriend began to argue and he allegedly threatened to “blow out” the tires of the women's vehicle.

Around that time, the driver recalled, Dennis reached for a gun that he had at his side, documents said.

The girlfriend retreated to her vehicle. Both women allegedly described seeing Dennis point the gun at them. They both feared he was going to shoot them.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton arraigned Dennis on a felony charge of aggravated assault and misdemeanor charges of simple assault and harassment. He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail following arraignment.

Stoughton also ordered that Dennis surrender his firearms to sheriff's deputies. Another bail condition is he must first be released to deputies.
