Defense wins goal-line matchup
LATROBE — Starting defense 1, starting offense 0.
Running back Verron Haynes was stopped short on a fourth-and-1 play during a goal-line scrimmage at the Pittsburgh Steelers' practice Wednesday night, with Casey Hampton, James Farrior and Troy Polamalu teaming to make the tackle.
The goal-line drill is as close as the Steelers get to gamelike conditions during camp. The offense gets the ball at the 5-yard line and has four plays to score.
Duce Staley was stopped for a yard each on the first two plays, and Haynes — the Steelers' third-down back the last two seasons — got two yards on third down.
"It was the first time we've hit, really, since the Super Bowl, and I think it got the juices going a little bit," coach Bill Cowher said.
During a second goal-line series run by backups, quarterback Charlie Batch threw a 5-yard scoring pass to fullback Brandon Joe after Cedric Humes was stopped for no gain on first down.
The night practice was one of two the Steelers will hold during camp. Cowher plans another goal-line session to wrap up the first full week of practice Saturday afternoon.
"You can't do this enough," Cowher said. "You go through an entire preseason, and you might get three or four repetitions down at the goal line — maybe — and those are very, very critical situations. That's why I feel it's important to get at least two good sessions in training camp so these guys get a feel for it."
