Pirates close deal with their top draft pick
PITTSBURGH - The Pirates reached a contract agreement Monday with outfielder Andrew McCutchen, the team's first-round draft pick.
"We are very pleased to come to terms with Andrew," said Pirate Manager Dave Littlefield. "He's had a great deal of success at the high school level and we're looking forward to him continuing that within the Pirates organization."
McCutchen said he feels "just like every other athlete, coming out there on the field and playing."
And he likes the team colors. "My high school colors were black and gold, so this is going to be a perfect fit," he said.
The 5'11", 170-pound McCutchen hit .709 this season with eight doubles, three triples and 16 homers as a senior at Fort Meade (Fla.) High School.
Baseball America rates McCutchen as the second best pure hitter and the fifth best player in the 50-round draft. He hit .507 in his first high school season as an eighth grader.
McCutchen is the second high school position player in as many years drafted on the first round by the Pirates. Last year, they went with Pittsburgh-area high school catcher Neil Walker, also the No. 11 overall pick.
