County men big winners in huge N.J. race

Going from Meadows Lands to the Meadowlands is a pretty big feat.

It's even bigger when you can come away with the biggest prize.

Keystone Savage, a 2-year old trotting colt owned by a local partnership, captured the $460,000 Peter Haughton Memorial at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J. Thursday.

Keystone Savage won by a nose over Lotsa Muscle in the seventh race in a time of 1 minute, 58 seconds.

"We didn't know what to expect when we first took him up to the Meadowlands," said Tom King of Valencia, one of four partners who own Keystone Savage.

Mike Hartley of Renfrew, Leo Sepanian of Butler and Brian Shoplik of Monroeville are the other partners.

"He trains at The Meadows (in Meadow Lands, outside Washington, Pa.), and we thought he had a good chance."

Keystone Savage, driven by Brian Sears, has had some success building up to Thursday's race.

He placed fourth at the Harriman Cup about five weeks ago at the Meadowlands, which was a $150,000 race, then won his leg of the New Jersey Sire Stakes, which also was held at the New Jersey track.

Keystone Savage placed third in the finals, which was a $175,000 race.

"I though he was pretty good, pretty fast," said King. "We had high expectations, but we didn't know if he could win it."

Entering the race Thursday, Keystone Savage had won $58,000 in five races and has four wins and two third-place finishes in eight starts.

"That put us seventh in the United States in 2-year-old money earners in the country, but after that race, he's the top earner in the country."

The horse has amassed $288,672 in earnings and the partnership knows this is the strongest of all of its horses.

"We're all friends and we all know each other," said King. "We've owned a number of horses through the years. Some good, some not so good.

"This is the best one yet. This was the top 2-year trotting race in the country," King added.

As for the rest of the year, Keystone Savage still has some work to do.

"He'll go back to The Meadows for some rest, then back to New jersey for a couple of races," said King.

"In early September, he'll compete at the American National. He's got a number of races. He'll be in Lexington, Ky., for the Red Mile later in September.

"He'll probably race another six times this year," King added.

And Keystone Savage had a tough act to follow. The partnership's other horse, Southwind Utica - named for a farm in New Jersey - has been racing in some big events this year.

The 3-year-old won the Harriman Cup last year. "It won $77,000 as a 2-year-old," said King.
