PUNXSUTAWNEY — Firefighters say an intense blaze consumed a building that housed a hotel, restaurant and lounge, but no one was inside at the time.

The fire was reported early Saturday morning with smoke coming from the Smuggler’s Inn, which was at the rear of the Punxsy Hotel Restaurant & Lounge on Sunday.

Within an hour, the flames burned so hot that the building’s north and south walls on the upper floors collapsed, damaging three vehicles nearby.

Punxsutawney Fire Chief Paul Hense said one firefighter suffered minor injuries after he was hit by falling debris, but no other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the State Police Fire Marshal.
