Those who haven't won a Super Bowl covet the ring

MIAMI — Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox — nor anything that is thy neighbor's.

A Super Bowl ring?

That's another story.

Long after the 10th commandment and its interpretation came the NFL. And with the NFL came the Super Bowl. And with the Super Bowl came glory — and envy.

No matter who you are and what you've achieved, there's always someone with more.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Kelly, who quarterbacked at the University of Miami but left the year before the Hurricanes won their first national title, led the Buffalo Bills through each of their four Super Bowl losses.

"You envy sometimes what it would feel like to be in a locker room after winning the Super Bowl," said the East Brady native, "because you go from such a high of winning your AFC Championship Game to finally getting into the Super Bowl and then to such a devastating low when you don't win it. It sits with you until you strap on your chin strap the next year. Even longer. It lasts a lifetime."

Kelly said he'll wear his Hall of Fame ring when he's in town this week, but he still longs for that other ring.

"Anybody in my position would envy that," Kelly said. "But the people who downgrade what we did have never played sports."
