NOTES

STARS

Marianne Timmer of the Netherlands won the 1,000-meter speedskating race, beating Cindy Klassen of Canada by .04 seconds. Anni Friesinger of Germany, the overwhelming favorite, lost her first 1,000 this season to take bronze.

Andre Lange and Kevin Kuske won the two-man bobsled, finishing .21 seconds ahead of Canada's Pierre Lueders and Lascelles Brown.

Italy's 4x10km cross-country team provided the host nation its third gold medal of the games. The Italians outlasted the German team by 15.7 seconds.

WHO'S LAUGHING NOW?

Jamaican bobsledders are no longer a punch line. Brown pushed sleds for Jamaica from 1999 until 2004 before helping Canada to the silver — only about a month after he obtained citizenship and earned the right to represent his new homeland.

NORTH AMERICAN NIGHTMARE

The U.S. and Canada both lost in men's hockey — by the same scores as the day before. Sweden beat the Americans 2-1, and Finland defeated Canada 2-0. On Saturday, the United States lost to Slovakia and Canada fell to Switzerland.

MONDAY, MONDAY

Heavy snow and dense fog Sunday forced a one-day postponement of the women's Olympic super-G race.

TURIN TALK

"Suddenly the police came in and didn't let us leave on the night before the competition. This happened without any positive result from doping control in the team. There's definitely no doping in the Austrian team. It's crazy." — Austrian cross-country skier Martin Tauber, who was up all night before the men's 4x10km relay. Italian authorities stormed into the Austrian athletes' housing, conducting an unprecedented search for evidence of doping. Austria finished last in the relay.
